FOR OUR CHILDREN SAKE, THINK SPORTS SAFTEY by jsaladin

This April should bring out the fun in Natomas children! With the advent of better weather, I can only expect an outburst of sports and outdoor activities to help fill our beautiful parks and activity centers. As a local pediatric dentist in Natomas, sponsoring my local Natomas Little League team as well as the Del Paso Heights Youth Sports League brought me lot of joy seeing our children active and healthy. It also brought me a sigh of relief that I saw fewer dental emergencies last year than any other year prior. It goes to show that Natomas parents care for their children and take seriously their child’s dental health through education and prevention.

Whether your child wins the latest game, you do not want him or her â€on the injured listâ€. A big part of the most damaging injuries to child athletes can be prevented with mouth protectors.

From soccer balls and in-line skates at Kokomo Park; to leotards and softball jerseys at Inderkum High, the shopping list for children’s sports seems endless. To save money and your child’s cute face, add a mouth protector to your list of things to buy.

Here are a few Fast Facts about Sports Safety that I typically share with my own patient’s parents:

â€Mouth protectors, made of soft plastic, are adapted to fit comfortably to the shape of the upper teeth;
â€Studies indicate nearly 75% of oral trauma in athletes occurs when they are not wearing mouth guards;
â€A mouth guard not only protects the teeth but also helps reduce the force that can cause concussions, neck injuries and jaw fractures;
â€More than 200,000 injuries are prevented each year by wearing mouth protectors;
â€Football, lacrosse, and hockey get a â€thumbs up†for requiring protective equipment;
â€Baseball and basketball get a â€thumbs down†for lagging behind in injury protection. Although nearly half of all sports related mouth injuries occur in basketball and baseball, mouth guards are not required;
â€A child should wear a mouth protector whenever he or she is in an activity with a risk of falls or of head contact with other players or equipment. This includes football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, martial arts, skateboarding and even gymnastics;
â€The oral injury rate for football players who must wear mouth guards is lower than all other sports, even women’s basketball.

So, what can Natomas parents, school nurses and coaches do to help? Preformed boil-to-fit mouth guards can be purchased in sporting goods stores. Different types and brands vary in terms of comfort protection and cost. Most pediatric dentists have mouth guard programs to make customized mouth guards. They cost a bit more, but are more comfortable and more effective in preventing injuries;

The most disturbing thing for me to see as a pediatric dentist is a traumatized child due to a preventable sports injury. Let’s keep our Natomas children active and healthy athletesâ€Let’s do our job as parents and protect them.

Ok so I have been trying to take it online at american saftey council or something, and I failed twice. :(
Anyway, the retake was 19.95 and then I heard that if you fail again it doesnt charge you.
Why is it asking me again for my credit card info!? Its not charging me money again is it????

Im sure it will. I would call them and they may need to recaculate the computer if they said that they dontneedto charge again. Dnt give them the card though! Goodd luck
