What Causes Ringing in the Ears? by Ron Subs
Almost everyone has experienced a temporary ringing in their ears due to a loud noise, or heard the rushing of their pulse in their head. For some people the ringing in their ears never goes away and can impact the quality of their life.
Constant ringing, hissing, buzzing, roaring, or other noise in the ears is called tinnitus. These noises do not come from the sufferer's surroundings; rather they come from the person's ears and may or may not be caused by a diagnosable problem. T
here are many known causes of ringing in the ears but for some people the underlying cause is never found. Likewise, some people can find relief through tinnitus treatments and others cannot and are forced to deal with the noise permanently.
There are two main types of diagnosable tinnitus. Noise in the ears that is pulsatile, which sounds like the heartbeat, is usually caused by a physical problem with the muscles near the ear, damage to the ear canal, or vascular problems in the blood vessels near the ears. This type of tinnitus can sometimes be cured if the damage heals or is corrected. Other times this type of tinnitus is permanent if the damage is irreversible.
Non-pulsatile tinnitus is the classic ringing in the ears associated with tinnitus and can be ringing, buzzing, hissing, or similar sounds. This type of tinnitus is caused by nerve problems. Damaged or faulty nerves send impulses to the brain that result in the constant noise in one or both ears. This type of tinnitus can be hard to treat and is often permanent.
There are many known causes for tinnitus although not all sufferers are able to figure out the cause of their problem. Age related hearing loss is a common reason that tinnitus develops as well as exposure to loud noises such as working in a loud environment for many years or many years of iPod use. There are other common causes of tinnitus which include:
A buildup of earwax.
A build up of certain medicines including aspirin.
Frequent ear infections or damage to the eardrum or inner ear structures.
Head or neck injuries
Pressure changes in the environment
Vascular or blood flow problems in the head or neck.
Nerve problems or damage or nerve disorders.
Certain diseases such as Aoustic Neuroma, Otosclerosis, or Thyroid disease.
Tinnitus can resolve itself and may not require medical treatment. However, some cases of tinnitus are permanent while others require medical help and treatment to cure or improve the symptoms. It is possible to live with ringing in the ears but doing so usually requires treatment of some sort as well.
