A CPAP machine is the primary device in a system that provides continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy to sufferers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). CPAP machines vary slightly in size, with most geared toward portability, but are typically placed on a night stand next to the bed. The entire system consists of the CPAP machine and a CPAP mask, with a hose connecting the two together. The machine is a medical device, and as such, requires a prescription from a licensed doctor. For first time users, it is recommended that a qualified technician fit the CPAP mask and set up the CPAP machine. However, the CPAP system is fairly uncomplicated and does not require much instruction. The pressure settings on the CPAP machine are different for everyone, and will also be part of the prescription from your doctor. The determination for the pressure setting is made from the results of your sleep test.
As you go to sleep each night, you must place the mask on your face and turn the machine on. Ideally, the system must be used every night. The CPAP machine works by gently forcing air through the mask, thereby keeping your airway open as you sleep. The pressure setting determines the rate at which air is pushed against the walls of your airway to keep it open. This can be slightly uncomfortable for some at first, but your body will adjust as therapy progresses. It’s important to continue using the CPAP machine as prescribed (this is called compliance with therapy) to give yourself the best opportunity to become familiarized with how it works and feels. For some patients, nasal irritation tends to be a typical negative consequence of CPAP therapy. This is a result of improper humidification and can be alleviated by using the optional CPAP machine humidifier. It can also be coupled with the use of a heated tube to help prevent rainout (water collected in the tube from the humidification process).
With consistent use of a CPAP machine, you will find that they symptoms from obstructive sleep apnea will be alleviated, leaving you feeling refreshed and alert during the day. You will also be markedly less irritable thanks to an uninterrupted night’s sleep. Most importantly, there will be significantly less risk for other health problems associated with lack of sleep, and obstructive sleep apnea.
Some CPAP users find that they simply can’t get used to the constant airway pressure that a standard CPAP machine utilizes to keep the airway open. In such cases, one may want to consider switching to an automatically adjusting CPAP machine or APAP. The most noticeable difference between an APAP machine and a traditional CPAP machine is that an APAP machine adjusts the amount of pressure applied to the airway on a breath by breath basis. For most, the automatically adjusting positive airway pressure feels significantly more comfortable than the traditional CPAP machine's constant positive flow. This, in turn, increases compliance and improves overall quality of life.
