Ever wondered how the entrants for the Breeders' Cup are decided? What process do the jockeys and horses have to go through to qualify? It can be a grueling process for some riders, with progress toward the big event coming one race at a time throughout the season. Here is a basic guide to the criteria used to determine each year's Breeders' Cup selections.
At the beginning of each racing season, a list of races and stakes are issued by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. There are three levels of stakes and handicaps, all designated by grade: Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III. Grade I races have the highest stakes and are most influential in determining the Breeders' Cup selections for the year.
The grading of each race is based on a number of factors, including the total payout pool, drug testing requirements, age or gender restrictions, and how long the race has been run. Only races that have already been run for two years under the same track conditions and distance are eligible to be graded. The race also must have a minimum prize pool of $75,000 to ensure that the race is worth the time and money of the AGS committee. With all of the controversy and scrutiny over drug testing, all entrants must be subject to post-race drug testing handled by a governmental entity. This assures the competitors that any race involved in the Breeders' Cup selections will be run under the same rules as all the others.
As long as the race meets these requirements, the Committee grades on the overall quality of the previous fields and the performance of horses in the previous fields in stakes both prior to and after the race. For example: if the winner of the Breeders' Cup Turf raced in the Arlington Million then the race would almost certainly be a Grade One.
If the Breeders' Cup race does not yet have 14 entrants, the points earned by a certain horse will have no effect on their eligibility. Points are only used when necessary to limit the number of Breeders' Cup selections for a given race. If the race field is going to be greater than 14, the first seven horses are ranked based on the total number of points they have earned in the graded stakes series throughout the year. Any horse earning a minimum of six points during the year will be given an automatic berth in the race. Juvenile horses are not subject to these rules for Breeders' Cup selections.
Point values are assigned to first-, second- and third-place finishes in stakes throughout the United States from January 1 through the pre-entry deadline date (October 14, 2008) that have been granted graded status by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Based on this system, win, place and show horses in Grade I stakes earn 10, six and four points, respectively. The top three finishers in Grade II stakes earn six, four and two points, respectively, and in Grade III stakes the points earned are four, two and one, respectively.

No, no it won't. The only way to pass a drug test is to give the people clean piss. Get someone else to piss for you, or else don't take the drugs if they won't have time to pass through your system before the test.
