Data Logging for Primary School Science Experiments by B2B Strategies
In today's school science and laboratory lessons students need reliable equipment to carry out investigations but just as reliable technology to record and capture the data from experiments and the DataWiz does just that. The DataWiz is an affordable and highly versatile datalogger designed with primary school science students in mind. Data logging allows the focus to be taken away from recording results and gives the pupils more time to interpret and analyse their data scientifically. The DataWiz software features an interactive graphical interface for primary level students that plots data into various graphs for logged data analysis and also allows the viewing of sensor readings in an animated flash file. Using the built in sensors and plug in temperature probe you can carry out a range of activities across the key stage 2 primary science curriculum. These include monitoring light levels in the classroom, investigating transparency and reflection, measuring noise levels in the local environment, study sound proofing, investigation of environmental insulating materials, monitoring of environmental conditions of animals and plants and measuring light levels in local woodlands.
This is an exciting new way to capture and record data during science and lab investigations. A compact device designed specifically for small hands, Data-Wiz works as a ΓΆΒ€stand alone' unit enabling pupils to measure temperature, sound and light levels. It can be used with a PC to record and plot readings from 2 or more sources. A range of external sensors can be connected to monitor a broad range of values such as pulse, breathing rate and force.
External DataWiz sensors
The light sensor measures on a scale from 0 to 100% and incorporates a collimating feature allowing very directional measurements to be carried out. This allows the light sensor to be mounted with the Data Wiz angular position sensor to create a polar plot.
The pulse sensor works by attaching an infra red sensor clip to the finger tip. The sensor works by transmitting a beam of IR light through the finger and uses the change in transmission level caused by the pulsing nature of blood flow to calculate heart rate.
The e.Log sound sensor is capable of measuring sound with either fast or slow response selected by a switch on the sensor itself. The fast response mode is suitable for speed of sound investigations carried out using two sound sensors a set distance apart, and for investigations of sound waveform. Slow response is ideally suited to monitoring background/ continuous sound. The sound sensor can measure over the range from 50-110dB.
A sensor designed specifically for measuring breathing rate. This sensor incorporates a disposable paper facemask onto which a fast response, thermocouple based sensor is clipped. The mask funnels the air to the thermocouple so that it detects even shallow breathing. The sensor detects when air is breathed in and breathed out.
