Current Social Workers: Experiences and Salaries?
I'm currently working on a BA in psychology. I'm thinking about getting a Master's in Social Work (MSW) following graduation. I figure it'll be more effective since I primarily want to do therapy, like substance addiction, depression, stress disorders, etc. After getting licensed, I'd like to work in a hospital or clinical setting because I don't really want to deal with the paperwork involved in a private practice. Is a hospital setting good for earning financial security?
I know salaries vary greatly depending on place of employment. So, if you're a social worker, where exactly are you employed (government, hospital, non-profit, private practice, etc.) and what is your salary?
Obviously, one doesn't go into social work for the money, but, as a single woman, I'd like to be financially secure, while helping others. Any positive anecdotes would be appreciated as well!

I am a single female and an Ed.D. candidate, licensed mental health counselor and a certified addictions professional. My past business partner is a social worker. We had a counseling center together before I moved out on my own.
I started my career in psychiatric hospital settings then moved to working in addiction treatment settings. I believe that the state that you live in will also dictate your salary in those settings; however I can tell you that it is also based upon talent.
I worked full time as a private practice clinician, but I was only working about 50 hours a month making 36,000 for the year. I am certain that if I worked more than 12-15 hours a week, I would have definitely made a lot more money. I went back to school with my free time and was able to obtain my Ed.D., while still working at my practice. Now, I work my therapy practice part time and hold a full time job with another addiction treatment center and still manage to have a social life. I am making around 60-70,000 per year give or take a few grand. I’m also thinking that in the future, when I get older, I would like to teach at a college.
My answer to you would be that being in the therapy world allows you to do many different things and the amount of money you make is based upon your motivation and talent. I would also suggest speaking to a LCSW or LMHC who is currently practicing. I have found that there is less overhead, such as paperwork, with private practice then working in a goverment or hospital setting. Sometimes they will allow you to interview them or go for a session to ask them questions about their career.
I love what I do and I think that you have to be passionate about your career choice because you will be doing it for the majority of your life. Good luck!
