Patient lifting is a process that requires great care and many times it requires specific patient lifting equipment. Whether you are taking care of a spouse or family member at home, or caring for patients in a hospital or long-term care facility, it is imperative to know how to properly lift and move them from one location or position to another. No matter how strong you think that you are you are at greatest risk for back injury when you are transferring a person from a bed to a chair, or positioning a person who is reclining in bed into a sitting position. You should also exercise caution when leaning over a person for long periods of time.
To prevent unnecessary back injury when you lift or move a person, you should always:
1.Use the muscles in your legs to lift and /or pull.
2.Maintain the proper alignment of your head and neck with your spine.
3.Maintain the natural curve of your spine.
4.Do not bend at your waist.
5.Avoid twisting your body when carrying a person.
6.Always keep the person who is being moved close to your body.
7.Keep your feet shoulder-width apart to maintain your balance.
In some cases, patients may require the use of a patient lift, such as a Hoyer lift or a ceiling lift also known as an overhead lift. This is a mechanical device that easily moves a patient from a bed or wheelchair to another location. A Ceiling lift is affixed to a track system so that it provides a safe, smooth and effortless ride for patients and their caregivers.

Am I just depressed, having anxiety or just stressed?
I am taking care of my 70 yr. old mother-in-law who is just starting to recover from a lumbar laminectomy, and my sister-in-law who has cerebral palsy and is in a w/c needing full cares doesn't speak or feed herself and needs everything done for her. They are living in our home. I have a hoyer lift in my home. Her mom is very critical of of her cares but says I am doing a great job, she needs caths done and enemas, to be fed throughout the day. She also has seizures. I get so wound up, there is so much to do, not just the nursing cares but laundry, cooking, med. set up and and administration you name it I even have to take care of their personal bussiness matters as well. Then my husband comes home and wants attention too. I really feel like getting in my car and just running away. I get so wound up by the end of the day I can't sleep and barely eat, food doesn't taste good although I do feel hungry at times. Please help I feel like I may just lose it and break down. What should I do?
sounds like you are very very stressed. you obviously have a lot on your plate. it is definitely not unusual for someone who is under so much pressure to be feeling the way you do. and the trouble sleeping, eating, and less satisfaction from food is another manifestation of the same issue. is there any way that you can get someone to help you out. perhaps another relative or a nurse. while you have lots of responsibilities you need to have time for yourself too. even if it's like a few hours a week so you can have some enjoyment in your life would definitely go a long way.
