LOCKHEED MARTIN HIGHLIGHTS BROAD CAPABILITIES AND PROVEN PERFORMANCE AT AERO INDIA 2009 by Dipayan Mazumdar

BENGALURU, India, February 13, 2009 †Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] executive briefings at Aero India 2009 highlighted the company’s broad capabilities and proven performance of its wide range of advanced technology products including the F-16IN combat aircraft, C-130J Hercules airlifter, MH-60R and K-MAX rotary wing platforms, Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, and Hellfire II and DAGRâ" missiles. Executives also briefed on Lockheed Martin’s capabilities in air and missile defense systems.

F-16IN and C-130J: The Best Choices for India

Orville Prins, Vice President, Business Development †India for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, briefed the media on Lockheed Martin’s F-16IN Super Viper, the most advanced fourth generation fighter in the world today. This unrivalled combat aircraft has been tailored exclusively to meet or exceed all of India’s Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) requirements. The F-16IN is the right choice for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and is ready for integration into India’s infrastructure and operations now.

Mr. Prins said Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has incorporated the latest technologies into the F-16IN which is the key to expanding mission roles and improving combat capability. With a robust upgrade capacity and the continuous insertion of technology, the F-16IN can be readily equipped with emerging capabilities throughout its lifecycle.

The worldwide marketplace is a good judge of product value. This is proven by 24 nations who have chosen the F-16 as their front-line multi role fighter with 52 follow-on buys. This makes the F-16 the most successful multi role fighter aircraft program in history.

Lockheed Martin supported the United States Air Force and submitted the F-16IN in response to the Government of India’s tender for the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft proposal in April of 2008. The next major step in the acquisition process is an invitation to all of the RFP compliant competitors to participate in the flight trials portion of the competition.

The Indian Air Force has selected the C-130J airlifter, with six aircraft to be delivered beginning in 2011. The Indian Air Force’s new Super Hercules will be the longer fuselage or "stretched" variant of the C 130J, similar to those being delivered to the U.S. Air Force. The C-130J takes full advantage of the Global Positioning System and other highly reliable, automated navigation and route planning aides. This allows the cockpit crew to focus on the mission and on flying rather than on managing aircraft systems.

India joins the growing number of nations with C-130J fleets including the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom. The C-130J carries eight 463L pallets, 97 medical litters, 24 CDS bundles, 128 combat troops and 92 paratroops.

Proven Systems for Modern Warfare and National Defense

Joe Garland, Vice President, International Business Development for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, discussed Lockheed Martin’s capabilities in air and missile defense, as well as the company’s precision engagement systems and solutions.

According to Lockheed Martin, the complexity of today’s missile defense systems requires nations to look for joint international solutions, utilizing proven technologies such as kinetic energy interceptors, to address the most challenging threats facing peaceful countries. Lockheed Martin is a major player in the missile defense arena around the world, offering a wide range of combat-proven air and missile defense solutions.

Mr. Garland also discussed the precision-strike laser-guided Hellfire II missile. Hellfire II can defeat advanced armor targets even in an environment with significant electro-optical countermeasures. Hellfire’s precision strike capability results in minimal collateral damage. Hellfire’s range, from 500 meters to 8,000 meters, gives the system wide utility on the battlefield.

Hellfire has been successfully integrated with every leading attack helicopter in the U.S. and many international fleets, and it is designed for accuracy and dependability, Garland said.

Lockheed Martin has also developed DAGRâ", a guidance kit that gives precision-strike capability to 2.75-inch rockets. Based on proven Hellfire technology in a smaller package, DAGR is designed to defeat non-armored and lightly armored targets in urban operations, while minimizing collateral damage. DAGR is fully compatible with Hellfire II.

In discussing Lockheed Martin’s Sniper Targeting Pod, Mr. Garland said the system provides the greatest combat capability of any advanced targeting pod in the world today.

Rotary Wing Solutions: MH-60R and K-MAX

Richard Holmberg, Director of Naval Helicopter Programs for Lockheed Martin Systems Integration †Owego, briefed the media on the advanced technology and mission capabilities of the newly-deployed MH-60R, the U.S. Navy’s most advanced anti-submarine and surface warfare helicopter. The Sikorsky designed and built airframe is equipped with all-new mission systems fully-integrated by Lockheed Martin.

Mr. Holmberg said the MH-60R gives pilots, aircrew and battle group commanders over-the-horizon situation awareness and communication relay, and the ability to protect the fleet from surface and subsurface threats in both the littoral and open ocean environments. The Indian Navy asks for 16 multi-role maritime helicopters. The MH-60R aircraft is an important capability for maritime force dominance.

Ron Christenson, Vice President, Maritime Business Development for Lockheed Martin Systems Integration †Owego, discussed another advanced rotary wing aircraft, the K-MAX. Lockheed Martin and Kaman Aerospace Corporation have transformed Kaman’s proven K-MAX external lift helicopter for the manned/unmanned military logistics resupply mission. K-MAX can carry a 6,000 lb sling load. Mr. Christenson said this single engine power lifter is ready for a variety of missions including humanitarian relief, medical evacuation, battlefield resupply, and armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

I need to Design a lifting sling?

i'm a lifting inspector engineer and i have to design a sling for unbalanced unit, its C.G is not in the center
after lifting this unit by 4 equal leges sling i found that the unit is un balanced so i have to short 2 legs of this sling
did any body know a formula depending on only the size of the unit, length of the sling & the difference of unbalace to give me the length of the shortend 2 legs?

Unless we know exactly where the center of gravity of gravity of the object that you want to lift, there is no way we can precisely determine the length of the shorter legs of the sling by calculations. What is normally done in cases like this is to use a double groove equalizing thimble. Without any clips on the legs of the sling, lift the load slightly above the ground to allow the legs of the sling to adjust so that the thimble align directly above the center of gravity of the load. Once this is attained, provide rope clips on the rope at the throat of the thimble to prevent any unnecessary movement of the thimble relative to the lengths of the legs of the sling.

If an equalizing thimble is not available, construct the sling using two lifting ropes of the same length. Attach the ends of each rope to the hitching points or lifting padeyes of the load. Run the two wires through a heavy duty shackle. Lift the load slightly above the ground by means of the shackle to allow the lengths of the sling legs to adjust until the shackle is directly above the center of gravity of the load. Mark the points of the lifting ropes where they bend over the shackle. This will give you exactly what the lengths of your sling legs should be.
