What to do to get into college?
Well I'm a junior this year. My grades are good. My GPA is about a 3.9 but i feel like i won't be able to apply to a four year college, specifically UCI. I just feel like more people out there have more potential than me. They are involved in like merits, health academy, and avid. It's too late for me to join those things. I'm currently in CSF. Any people out there know what i can do to have a better chance of getting accepted?
Oh by the way, i'm also in 2 honor class too.
csf is awesome. being in other clubs is great and all, but unless those kids hold a position in those clubs, it's not that big of a deal.
my list of some stuff to consider:
ap classes. but watch out. 1 or 2 should do. so many overachieving students end up taking 3 or 4 ap classes because they feel they should, when really they only take em to hang out with their other overachieving friends. and then all those people just end up lowering their GPAs. i was one of those kids. but since you're already a junior, those two honor classes should do for now. take some more aps next year.
on that note, ap tests might or might not be worth the 83 bucks. if you're gonna take one, you really should aim for a high score (4 or 5), and even if you do get those scores, it might be a mistake to use them in your college. ap tests are curved, so, for example, if you get a 5 on an ap biology test and decide to use it at your college, your major better not revolve around biology. because then you're going to end up skipping to a second year course, and risk failing the class because you do not actually know as much material as they want you to. and some colleges might not even accept the test, regardless of the score. it's up to you to do the research.
good sat scores. typically around 1900 and up. the math and writing sections are the most important. grammar section is way easier, but not nearly as important. you should think about buying a study guide, or have your parents dish out a few hundred bucks for an sat school.
a sport would help A LOT. but most people may have a hard time managing their school stuff with all the competitions and practices.
extracurriculars and community service. when i was in high school i helped out at cultural festivals and senior centers. alot of people volunteer their time at hospitals. if you have the time and dedication, you can even volunteer at a ucla medical center. unfortunately, i couldnt afford the 2 hour drive from my home. i also had a passion for wushu.
there were also foreign student program type things. my chinese teacher told me about a month-long summer trip to china to sightsee and tutor english to other students at a camp.
the colleges want to see that you're a well-rounded person. not just a quiet bookworm. for the sports and extracurriculars, just make sure you're participating in things you actually enjoy. because all that stuff isnt just for filling up space in your college application. it's also of great use in writing your personal statement. participating in more things outside of school is meant to help provide you a greater perspective on life and the world, and people who read your statement want to see that element of personal growth in your essay, even if they will only spend about 30 seconds on it.
since you're a junior, you still have lots of time. just dont waste any.
