DIY timber/wooden safety bed rail for toddler.?

Does any one know how to attach a piece of timber to the side of a bed to make a nice looking safety rail?
I wanted to make it 3/4 of the bed's length.
I know it could be screwed in but I was hoping that there was a metal clasp or something that could be drilled into the rail but could be removed from the bed without marking it too much.
Or does anyone know how to make any sort of safety bad rail?

Two methods:

The first would use an "h" shaped metal bracket that would fit over the bottom rail, and your safety rail would bolt into it (you'd need a pair of these, of course). The 'legs' of the "h" would have to be fairly long, to keep the safety rail from being twisted off of the bed rail. I've seen some sliding barn door hardware that might do the trick, but you'd probably have to have something made for you, if the bed rail is less than 1.5 inches thick.

The second, and easier method, is to create an "L" shaped framework. Slide the long side of the "L" under the mattress. This could be made out of wood, or pipe, or a combination. The safety rail portion could be permanently attached to the long "L" side, or removable. I've seen metal tube versions of this type of safety rail for sale at medical supply stores that cater to home medical supplies for the handicapped.
