Machine shoulder press exercise by Fitness Uncovered
Usually it is recommended that free weight exercises are a superior choice over their machine counterparts, with the added benefits of range of motion and stability muscles recruitment, but we should not exclude machines. The lever shoulder press is an example where a machine could be implemented into a training regime to very fruitful results due to some important advantages.
Firstly the lever press allows for the trainer to reach high levels of intensity without worrying about failing on a repetition. Failing a repetition on a machine would usually not result in any risk of falling weights which may injurer the trainer or other gym goers, unlike free weights.
Another advantage is that mainly advanced training techniques such as drop sets can be easily used when using a lever press due to the ease of changing the resistance on the machine, coupled with the less hazard when maxing out, as mentioned above.
The lever press will recruit the front and side deltoids effectively.
The rep range 6-12 is commonly said to be a suitable rep range for anybody whos goal is to increase muscle size and mass. This of course is not universal and it would be wise to experiment with different rep and set ranges to see which regime seems to be the most effective for you.
Instructions:
Load/or set machine with correct weight.
Keep torso erect and back straight.
Grip handles with an overhand grip.
Whilst keeping torso erect and back straight, press the handles upwards until arms are extending above.
Whilst keeping good body posture, slowly lower the handles to starting position.
Repeat for desired amount of repetitions.

correct shoulder posture?
Usually I walk with my shoulders slightly in front of my chest, but ive noticed doing this causes my shoulder blades to stick out at an angle which looks strange. Am I supposed to hold my shoulders behind my chest, is this healthier? Ive tried doing this for a few days, it puts my S blades away lol but makes my upper body feel tensed, and sorta uncomfortable. Should I just get used to this?
ALSO: should I keep my shoulders back constantly, even when say im sitting in a chair or in the bath, or just when im walking or standing etc,
yes you need to hold your shoulders back more. Your chest should be open, and shoulders down, head up and slightly back. You will have to "get used to it" but the best thing to do is strengthen your core muscles (like your stomach and back) and your body will kind of do it on its own.
I had stomach surgery 3 years ago, and it ruined my stomach muscles. So I started to hunch. This caused me to pinch a nerve in my shoulders, and now my hands don't work. Which is awesome. I lose grip constantly and just can't pick up small things like coins and what not. Posture is important!
