Can I use any 12V power cell battery for audio applications in place of a capacitor?
I have been looking at batteries such as Kinetik power cell batteries, and was wondering if other SLA AGM batteries will function as effectively as a Kinetik? I have found that universal power cells, along with power cell batteries from Jump starters are much more reasonable, and the specs appear to be very close if not identical between the batteries.
Like Brock said, SLA's usually aren't the best to use in car applications. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) are usually what are used in high-powered audio systems now because they can be deep-cycled time after time and still be able to charge up and perform like the day they were bought. When an auxiliary battery is installed, there is an isolator relay in the power wire between your main and auxiliary batts. In a 12V application, this isolator closes at 12.4V, cutting off the connection between your main and auxiliary batts so you can run your system off of your auxiliary batt all the way into a deep cycle (if went that far) without using any power from your main battery. When the vehicle starts and the alternator is putting a charge into the battery, the isolator opens at 14V, allowing both batteries to be charged simultaneously. Hope this helps!
P.S- Another advantage of AGM's over other types of batteries is that they don't need to be ventilated and can be mounted in just about any position or angle. Conventional batteries give off Hydrogen gas, which is HIGHLY explosive when charging and discharging. Not the kind of gas you want built up in your trunk in the off chance that something decides to spark. That's how a friend of mine blew up his trunk and toasted $900 worth of audio!
