You will be asked to fast overnight and arrive at the lab or doctors office early in the morning in order for a fasting blood glucose test to be administered. A small amount of blood will be drawn. If your blood glucose range is 126 or higher, you have diabetes. If your blood glucose ranges between 110 and 125, you may have pre-diabetes. Your doctor is likely to run the test again to double check your numbers.
When people are first diagnosed with diabetes, they are often depressed, seeing diabetes as a sign of failure, or as some kind of death sentence. It is neither of these things. You can consider diabetes a way to prompt you into positive action. The actions you need to take to manage your diabetes successfully are the same ones you need to take to be a healthier person. As a newly diagnosed diabetic, you will have a more compelling reason to create a healthier lifestyle for yourself.
Its all about lifestyle change. As your disease progresses, you will likely need some medication or even insulin, but initially, your doctor is likely to prescribe diet and exercise. With diet and exercise you can achieve a reduction in weight. Even a 10% reduction in weight has been shown to have dramatic improvements in blood glucose levels. You should also strive to reduce your intake of salt and fats.
Regular exercise helps the body to utilize insulin more effectively. Insulin is responsible for maintaining proper blood glucose levels. It is possible to reverse diabetes with diet and exercise alone. If you are not fortunate enough to achieve this result, the improved insulin response is reason enough to make regular exercise a part of your life.
You will also have to begin a regime of testing your own blood. Your doctor will tell you how often, and when to test yourself. Over time, by doing this, you will learn what affects your blood sugar, and will be able to make better food choices. Illness and stress can have an impact along with what you eat, and even when you eat certain foods. Testing is a good way to understand what is going on in your body.
When selecting a meter, consider how you will be using it. Do you want a compact meter to take everywhere you go? Will you be testing mostly at home, in which case size isnt an issue? Do you need a meter with a larger readout? There are very basic meters that simply display your results and keep a limited history while others offer the ability to synch with your computer to download information and create graphs. Many people think that testing is painful. Todays meters use tiny lancets. Some offer the opportunity for alternate site testing, which may be even less painful, but is also slightly less accurate. Bear in mind that most meters use specific brands of strips and costs can vary greatly. Its a good idea to check with your insurance company to see which strips and meters are covered by your plan.
As a diabetic, you will need to see your doctor regularly. Your doctor will want to do a regular, routine screening of your hemoglobin A1c. Often this test is run 4x/year. It gives a general indication of blood glucose over the prior three months. Your doctor will also check your feet regularly as diabetic complications often arise in the feet and eyes. To make sure your eyes are healthy, it is a good idea to routinely schedule exams with an ophthalmologist. Your family physician may be able to help you control your diabetes, or you may be referred to an endocrinologist and/or a registered dietician.
Finally, follow your doctors instructions regarding any prescribed medications. It is possible that you wont feel any differently taking the medication than you did before, but it is helping to keep your blood sugar lower.

how to use a water testing strips for an aquarium?
i recently received testing strips for my aquarium(not expired) from a friend but i don't know how to use them (instructions are torn off) . i know what each padding is though
how long are you supposed to dip them in the water?
and how many times are you supposed to check the water?

the strips check:
ph, hardness, alkalinity, nitrite, and nitrate
you just dip them in and pull them out normally. You need the color chart though to tell you what the readings are.
Check your water every week unless it is a new tank and is cycling which you check everyday (i think) or every other day
